Nature-Based Solutions: The Path to True Sustainability
By Harish Athreya
An Interview with Dr. Madhuri Subbarao, MSc (UK), PhD Candidate in Sustainability Psychology
In the midst of rapid development, we often neglect the crucial relationship we have with nature. As the modern world faces environmental crises such as climate change and biodiversity loss, the need for sustainable solutions becomes more urgent. Dr. Madhuri Subbarao, a prominent conservationist and researcher, advocates for nature-based solutions as the key to achieving true sustainability. In this interview, Dr. Subbarao shares her journey, insights, and vision for a sustainable future.
Dr. Subbarao, what inspired you to focus on nature-based solutions for sustainability?
Dr. Subbarao: Our relentless pursuit of development has often led us away from our roots—our connection with nature. Observing the escalating environmental crises, I realized that our traditional approaches to development were not sustainable. My extensive work as a conservationist, social worker, and researcher showed me that integrating nature-based solutions is essential for true sustainability. This approach isn’t just theoretical; it’s practical and necessary for our survival and well-being.
Can you tell us about your journey towards sustainability?
Dr. Subbarao: Reflecting on my journey, I see my past contributions as small but significant steps in the larger effort to ensure our planet’s well-being. These efforts are just the beginning. There’s a long road ahead that involves adopting a holistic approach to coexist with other species on Earth. This vision requires us to reduce our needs and greeds, change our lifestyles, and shift from consumerism to conservation.
What are some of your notable achievements in the field of environmental conservation?
Dr. Subbarao: One of my proudest achievements is co-founding Friends of Lakes (FOL), the world’s largest unregistered voluntary group focused on lake rejuvenation. This initiative has saved numerous lakes from commercialization, preserving valuable public resources and protecting biodiversity. A notable success was saving Doddabommasandra Lake from encroachment, safeguarding 8 crore INR of taxpayer money.
Additionally, I’ve been involved in aquifer mapping, tree planting drives, and river rejuvenation projects funded by global organizations like the World Bank. My work with BBMP (Bruhat Bangalore Mahanagara Palike) includes conducting public toilet audits, promoting solid waste management, and organizing educational programs in schools across Bangalore.
How important is public engagement and education in your conservation efforts?
Dr. Subbarao: Public engagement and education are pivotal. I’ve taught millions of students about the environment, health, and safety, conducted financial literacy programs for senior citizens, and celebrated eco-friendly festivals. My advocacy extends to working with government bodies on water and groundwater management policies and promoting sustainable practices through media appearances and public talks. Educating the public and engaging them in conservation efforts is crucial for creating lasting change.
Your work has received various recognitions and awards. Can you highlight some of these achievements?
Dr. Subbarao: I’ve been honored with several awards, including:
• Best Presentation of Research Paper from IIT-BHU (2023)
• Environment Award from the Minister of State Sri Muralidharan (2023)
• Women’s Day Achiever in Environment Protection (2019)
• CoRWA Green Award (2017)
• Youth Award from Bangalore Youth Festival (2016)
These recognitions are a testament to the impact of my work and the collective effort towards environmental sustainability.
What is your vision for the future of sustainability?
Dr. Subbarao: The path to sustainability is a continuous journey requiring collective effort and unwavering commitment. My vision is to foster a world where we thrive alongside all species, reducing our ecological footprint and embracing nature-based solutions. By changing our lifestyle and prioritizing conservation over consumerism, we can pave the way for a sustainable future.
In conclusion, let us remember that the Earth is our only home. As we navigate the challenges of modernity, it’s imperative to realign our priorities and embrace sustainability. The journey is long, but with collective effort and dedication, we can make a significant impact. Let’s thrive together with nature, for it is the only path to true sustainability.
